Arson destroys camper in Plymouth

WASHINGTON - President Bush on Friday accused Russia of “bullying and intimidation” in its harsh military treatment of Georgia, saying the people in the former Soviet republic have chosen freedom and “we will not cast them aside.”

Bush ratcheted up his rhetoric against Moscow as Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice was in Tbilisi, Georgia to pursue a diplomatic solution to the week-old crisis. Standing alongside Rice, pro-Western President Mikhail Saakashvili said he had signed a cease-fire agreement with Russia that protects Georgia’s interests despite concessions to Moscow.

Rice said all Russian troops “must leave immediately” and said she had been told that Russian President Dmitry Medvedev will sign an identical pact.

The rush of events came as Bush began a two-week holiday from Washington. He left the White House after his remarks and flew to his ranch in Texas. Rice is to arrive there early Saturday to brief the president about the showdown between Moscow and Tbilisi over two separatist provinces in Georgia.

“Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity must be respected,” said Bush, speaking just outside the Oval Office.

With just five months remaining in his administration, Bush faces one of his biggest foreign policy challenges in dealing with a suddenly assertive Russia, along with unfinished wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and the deeply troubled search for peace in the Middle East. Bush’s influence is waning as the world turns its attention to the race to determine who will succeed him.

Bush said that Russia, with its air, sea and land attacks in Georgia, had damaged its relations with the United States and other Western powers.

“Bullying and intimidation are not acceptable ways to conduct foreign policy in the 21st century,” the president said. “Only Russia can decide whether it will now put itself back on the path of responsible nations or continue to pursue a policy that promises only confrontation and isolation.

“To begin repairing relations with the United States, Europe and other nations and to begin restoring its place in the world, Russia must respect the freedom of its neighbors,” Bush said.

The White House has hedged on what consequences Russia might face. The administration is considering expelling Russia from international groups such as the Group of Eight industrialized nations. Questions also have been raised about U.S. cooperation with Russia in space.

“We need to see where this all ends up,” White House deputy press secretary Gordon Johndroe said on Air Force One, flying to Texas with Bush. “We are hopeful that we can continue cooperation with the Russians — and that’s across the board. But a lot of this depends on Russia, and what Russia’s actions are in the near future. Right now their actions have been inconsistent … with the fundamental principles of a Europe whole, free and at peace. So cooperation on a wide range of issues going forward depends on the actions that Russia takes.”

Supermarkets Are Responding To Local Food

Major supermarket chains are trying to integrate local food into their operations, and the problems they encounter reminds me of a saying from Lee Bryant: “When you try to adopt bottom-up practices, everything has to be bottom up.”

“Regional agriculture systems in the Northeast, mid-Atlantic and Southeast are really quite broken,” said Karen Karp, the president of the company. “Small farmers can sell direct, but there is no infrastructure for middle-sized farmers to get stuff into supermarkets.” There are no warehouses, limited trucking facilities and few distributors.

These growers are used to picking the zucchini and bringing it to a stall at a farmers’ market. In order to sell to grocery stores, they have to learn pricing, invoicing and ordering systems as well as post-harvest handling techniques that include chilling, sorting and grading for size and color.

Big retailers have even more work to do. Used to making just a few phone calls to large produce distributors, often thousands of miles away, they do not have the setup or the personnel to deal with individual farmers who deliver to the back door.

Some of them are reluctant to do so and small farmers either have to join a co-op or find a distributor who can deliver to the supermarket’s warehouse.

The chains also have to change their purchasing practices to make room for seasonal local produce instead of being locked into a year-round contract with one source in order to insure the lowest prices.

“It takes innovation and reallocation of resources,” said Mr. Nicholson of Red Jacket Orchards. “It takes passion, and patience to get good collaboration. They have to be willing to spend more money because it’s costlier buying from small growers.”

Ms. Karp said: “If retailers want to deal with these farmers they can no longer push all the risk about food safety and quality assurance back on the individual farmers, who can’t bear those costs.”

Which could be called the ‘Walmart effect’ — as when Walmart ordains the dimensions, variety, and price for tomatoes, effectively controlling all aspects of the entire agricultural food chain for tomatoes based on their control of the end point of sales.

One of the attractions of a fully localized economy is taking control out of the hands of large chains, and seeing the possibility of small groceries buying in smaller quantities from local, small food producers. Cutting out the (growing) costs of long-distance transport — and the subsidies implicitly being provided to the transport industry by taxation and government support of the highway systems and related infrastructure — could translate to good economics around local distribution.

At certain times of the day, in many American cities, 30% or more of the traffic is related to food distribution. The costs of that are reflected in the atmosphere, the funds allocated to roads and intrastructure, and the direct costs of food.

Shiny Media Co-Founder Norris Leaves To Form Online Video Startup

ashley norris, co-founder of shiny media - probably the uk’s maximum effort attempt so far at creating a blog-centric consumer media cast - is leaving the rig to carry on with other interests.

“I decided to leave several months ago largely because I had my own startup idea which didn’t really fit with Shiny,” Norris told me. “I had also been involved with the company in its various guises for five years four of which at the helm so that seemed long enough. I have other things on the go. I am working on a startup in the online video arena, am doing some consultancy mainly for (sister PR agency) Shiny Red and have spare time to work with some other startups. I am still a significant shareholder in the company and on the board.”

Started in 2004 by Norris and two fellow technology journalism freelancers, Shiny is best known for its Shiny Shiny (girly gadgets), Tech Digest (technology) and Shoewawa (footwear) blogs; it sold half the company for $4.5 million last year to new VC Brightstation. Norris told me he later relinquished the CEO role to become strategy director.

MessyMedia, a similar startup, closed last month citing lack of advertisers and writing talent. Norris told me Shiny is “in rude health”, claiming four million monthly readers. But he says a “lack of a content-friendly VC ecosystem, fierce opposition from existing media and the huge online presence of the BBC” make it hard for independent UK content startups to gain traction.
